Nokia Siemens Networks, the newest vendor alliance, unveiled its product portfolio and new corporate logo at 3GSM on Monday.

The merged company - inevitably referred to simply as NSN - will focus on six key areas: radio access, service core and applications, OSS, broadband access, IP/transport, and managed services.

The merger is expected to close by the end of March, company officials said.

Jose Costa e Silva, who will head up the service department, said in the new market environment NSN was one of the big four telecom vendors, along with Ericsson, Alcatel-Lucent and Huawei.

He said the value in the comms sector, like that in IT, would be in software and services, not in hardware.

Costa e Silva, an executive from Siemens, said it was critical for the new company to develop IP and IT capabilities. He said that one of his customers had told him the company was "stupid" to merge with Nokia.

"He said we should have gone with IBM or Cisco. It shows that that's what he thinks we need - IT, security, services capability," Silva said.

In five years, it was likely that firms like IBM, HP and Cisco would be NSN's rivals as much as Ericsson and Huawei, he said.
