Nokia to bring CDMA Lumia to China

Nokia today unveiled its first Windows Phone smartphone tailored for the Chinese market, in collaboration with China Telecom.

The operator is launching Nokia’s Lumia 800C, a CDMA version of the Finnish vendor’s existing Windows Phone device, and detailed plans to extend the portfolio with a second tailored Lumia device – the 610C – in 2Q12. The 800C will hit storesin April, priced at 3,599 Yuan ($570) contract free.

Nokia chief executive, Stephen Elop, says China is an important market, and the vendor has worked closely with China Telecom to create “compelling, locally relevant,” content for the device.

Wang Xiaochu, chairman of China Telecom, adds the smartphone highlights his firm’s “optimism and excitement for the future of Windows Phone and Nokia Lumia in China.”

The vendor and software partner Microsoft have launched a local apps development scheme to boost availability of tailored content, and will offer access to local web services including Sina, SOHU, Tencent and Renren. Magazine apps developer Trends is also on board, offering access to titles including Cosmopolitan, FHM, Harper’s Bazaar, and Esquire.
