NEC plans to globally launch the VC-970 encoder and VD-970 decoder in July as part of a new H.265/HEVC codec family that make it possible to process 4K/ultra-high-definition (UHD) video in real time.
This new product series is capable of encoding 4K/UHD video to approximately 1/500th of its original size, while performing ultra-low delay encoding and decoding of approximately 99 milliseconds.
It also supports BT.2020 and HDR, which is a next-generation technology that expands the color gamut while increasing brightness and producing a high quality and truly immersive 4K/UHD video.
The new hardware-based and compact sized (1U half rack) 4K/UHD codec is the successor of the first generation model (VC-8150/VD-8150).
In recent years, demand for 4K/UHD video quality has been rapidly increasing. As a result, the development of 4K/UHD related technologies are being accelerated around the globe to meet such rising demand.
Under these circumstances, NEC has targeted H.265/HEVC as a core technology and is now developing a full line-up of products for broadcasting and distributing programs of 2K, 4K and 8K.
