Microsoft is plotting an attack aimed at the Android and iPhone operating systems, according to a Digitimes report.

Unnamed sources at Taiwan handset makers are saying that Microsoft will launch Windows Mobile 6.5 on October 1, and then add an upgrade to the software platform in February 2010 that will feature a touch interface.

WinMo 6.5 is slated for release in conjunction with the introduction of Microsoft's Windows Marketplace for Mobile application storefront.

Microsoft will not phase out WinMo 6.5 when it launches Windows Mobile 7 in fourth-quarter 2010, but instead will reduce the price of WinMo 6.5.

The software giant will thus have products targeting the Android platform (WinMo 6.5) and the iPhone operating system (WinMo 7).
