M1 has invested S$85 million ($69 million) to roll out a 900-MHz 3G network as part of its modernization plan.

The Singaporean operator tapped Nokia Siemens Networks for the project, which will complement M1's existing 3G operations on the 2.1-GHz band.

The carrier further said network modernization program includes the upgrading of M1’s core infrastructure to an all-IP network and pooling of mobile switching centres and customer data bases to enable dynamic allocation of resources.

The deployment of the 3G radio network on the 900-MHz frequency band involves the addition of new radio modules in base stations across the island, the carrier further said.

M1’s network modernization and the deployment of 3G radio network on the 900-MHz frequency band are scheduled to complete in the second half of 2013.
