Korea Telecom and China Mobile have teamed up to offer cross-border LTE roaming services based on VoLTE.
The operators demonstrated what they said were the first international VoLTE roaming services last week at the 2014 GSMA Mobile Asia Expo, the Korea Herald reported.
The demonstration involved HD video calls with KT CEO Hwang Chang-gyu and China Mobile chairman Xi Gouhua.
The service will be made available to customers in both South Korea and China in November.
The collaboration signifies that the TD-LTE mobile standard used by China Mobile and the FDD standard favored by KT have become compatible enough to support cross-technology roaming.
KT is also collaborating with Japan's NTT DoCoMo on the commercialisation of new LTE roaming services, the report adds.
DoCoMo has been ramping up its LTE roaming capabilities. In late March, the company launched international LTE roaming in eight regions - Hong Kong, the USA , Canada, France, Puerto Rico, Alaska, Hawaii and the US Virgin Islands.
