The lack of standards for IMS phones is seen further slowing the mass-market adoption of IMS functionality, allowing SIP-enabled handsets to penetrate the market faster. According to Disruptive Analysis, mass-market penetration, more than 20%, of IMS functionality in handsets will not take place until 2009. By 2011, there should be around 500 million IMS-capable handsets shipped globally. In the meantime, SIP-enabled units are filling the gap, with 48 million 'naked SIP' phones expected to be shipped worldwide this year.
