India's Idea Cellular has contracted Nokia to deploy an optical transport network solution to help meet the market's exponential growth in demand for traffic.
Idea will adopt a Nokia Photonic Services Switch (PSS) based WDM platform across constrained geographies of its network to allow it to offer high-bandwidth services to customers in these areas without placing excess added load on its network.
Nokia will also provide professional services for installing and commissioning, project management, training and support for the network rollout.
Idea Cellular CTO Anil Tandan said the operator has witnessed massive data growth and demand for bandwidth since rolling out its pan-India wireless broadband network in the past year.
“We have a long standing partnership with Nokia and we are confident that Nokia will bring the same expertise and commitment in deploying optical network as it does in Radio, Core and IP domains,” he said.
“This collaboration marks a new phase in our relationship, and we look forward to leveraging Nokia's strength in optical network domain to meet our requirements."
