Huawei, a leading global information and communications technology (ICT) solutions provider, and leading South Korea operator LG Uplus jointly conducted a live on-site demo of the world’s first three-carrier (3CC) carrier aggregation (CA) for LTE-Advanced at Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2014. Peak data rates were shown to reach as high as 450 Mbps. Both companies also announced 3CC CA would be deployed on LG Uplus’ live network later this year.
LG Uplus began providing LTE services in July 2013; by September 2013 their number of users on LTE reached seven million, or more than one-seventh of South Korea’s total population. To provide even better services for their growing subscriber base and maintain a leading market position, LG Uplus sought to implement Huawei’s 3CC CA solution to leverage the three bands they possess spectrum on: 850MHz, 2.1GHz, and 2.6GHz.
Huawei and LG Uplus first collaborated in mid-January this year to successfully complete an end-to-end 3CC CA test in a lab environment in South Korea that achieved a 300 Mbps data rate over the air. The solution demonstrated at MWC 2014 aggregates three carriers of 10MHz, 10MHz and 20MHz bandwidth to efficiently deliver an ultra-fast data speed, strengthen overall network capacity, and provide a more seamless user experience.
Huawei’s 3CC CA solution was designed to address a key operator pain point: how to provide an enhanced LTE service experience on wideband frequencies without possession of enough contiguous spectrums. The joint demonstration of the solution at this year’s MWC shows the technology’s maturity and confirms its readiness for implementation on LTE networks worldwide on behalf of operators looking to evolve to LTE-Advanced (LTE-A).
MWC 2014 will be held in Barcelona from February 24 to 27. Huawei will showcase its latest products and solutions at Fira Gran Via Hall 1 and Hall 3.
