Hong Kong's HGC Global Communications Limited (HGC) plans to introduce the ability for customers to pay bills and purchase bandwidth on its extensive Wi-Fi network over WeChat Pay HK.
The newly added WeChat Pay Wallet's Telecom Payment value added service will allow smartphone users to purchase a Wi-Fi pass from HGC in an encrypted payment environment.
HGC plans to roll out the payment service to Hong Kong's total population of WeChat users in phases, which will allow HGC broadband customers to pay their home broadband bills using their mobile devices.
The HGC on air Wi-Fi pass will meanwhile allow customers to purchase between 1 and 30 days of bandwidth over the company's Wi-Fi footprint. Prices start at HK$18 ($3) for a one day pass. Until April 30, the 30-day pass will be discounted to HK$58, and will increase to HK$88 after the promotion period ends.
HGC is Hong Kong's largest outdoor Wi-Fi service provider with over 29,000 hotspots across the city, including in large shopping malls, chain coffee shops and fast food stores, commercial buildings and private estates.
The Wi-Fi service is backed by HGC's fiber backbone, which offers speeds of up to 1,000Mbps in some areas.
