Google is gearing up for its biggest Google Fiber rollout to date, with plans to launch services in the city of San Antonio in Texas.

The company's plans for rolling out the IGbps fiber project involve rolling out 4,000 miles of fiber in the USA's seventh most populated city, NeuroGadgetreported.

Google's disruptive ambitions for its Google Fiber project have been held back by regulatory and technical issues, and the service is currently only available in Austin, Kansas City and Provo.

But the rollout to a major US city may help change this, allowing Google to fulfil its ambition of ensuring fiber is the prevailing access technology in the US.

The size of the location and the city's rugged terrain will require Google to lay enough fiber for a two-way trip to and from Canada, the report states.

For Asian operators the project could potentially provide a blueprint for large-scale fiber rollouts and rollouts in geographically difficult areas.
