Gemalto has announced plans to launch a new 5G SIM aimed at meeting operator requirements for the next generation mobile technology.
The Gemalto 5G SIM will be compliant with 3GPP 5G specifications and the recommendations laid out by SIMalliance.
It will be available in all SIM form factors - including eSIM - during the first half of 2019, and will support functionality including standards-compliant global 5G roaming, onboard identity encryption and trusted environment protections.
Gemalto has been working with 5G industry stakeholders around the world in the development, standardization, prototyping and testing of the product.
Now the company has announced that it is extending its partnership with Qualcomm to allow OEMs to more easily develop 5G devices using Qualcomm's 5G chipsets and the Gemalto 5G SIM.
"The 5G SIM provides the foundation of trust in this next generation mobile network for operators and other stakeholders in the ecosystem" Gemalto EVP of mobile services and IoT Emmanuel Unguran said.
"It will help operators unleash the full 5G potential, maximize their network investments, and simplify new service deployment with full backward compatibility to previous 3G/4G technology."
