French operators will be clear to launch commercial 4G services in the second half of 2011, regulator Arcep has announced.

The agency is preparing to open an application process for 4G spectrum in the 800MHz and 2.6GHz frequencies with the aim of awarding licenses during 1H11.

It is also working on final details of regulations covering technical trials in the 2.6GHz frequency to ensure all license applicants receive relevant data from the tests, and will pave the way for trials in the 800MHz frequency by mid-January.

The regulator also revealed the deadline for applications to conduct trials in the 2.6GHz frequency has been extended by “several months,” beyond the original date announced in March.
