Rumors that Google is planning to build its own fiber backbone network are being replaced with rumors that it's given up on the idea, according to Light Reading.
Google has never confirmed or denied rumors that surfaced last year that it was buying dark fiber in the US, possibly to create an 'alternate Internet' for its users and advertisers, or to expand its municipal Wi-Fi networks throughout the country, as well as its grid computing and broadband video initiatives. Now, 'well placed sources' are saying that Google has decided its better to lease fiber than own it.
Why the alleged change of heart‾ For one thing, there's plenty of cheap 10-Gigabit capacity to be had in the States, says Heavy Reading chief analyst Scott Clavenna. For another, Google learned the hard way with its experience of setting up a Wi-Fi network in San Francisco that being a network operator means a ton of logistical, regulatory, government and public relations hassles, including rights-of-way and privacy.
