Sony Ericsson reaches an agreement to acquire Swedish software company UIQ Technology. UIQ Technology, which uses Symbian OS, licenses the UIQ user interface and application development platform to mobile phone vendors worldwide.

The CDMA Development Group reports that cdma2000 has quickly become the technology of choice for African operators. Currently, there are 33 cdma2000 operators in commercial operation in Africa, representing a subscriber base of around 5.4 million people.

Gemalto, a digital security firm, unveils a banking microprocessor card to perform multiple types of Visa payments. The Gemalto card is the first contactless product that meets global contact-less specification for interoperability and will be available in mass volumes to major financial institutions starting January 2007.
