New Zealand Telecom denies local media reports that it will spend $700 million to build a new hybrid mobile phone network. The firm however said it is considering a network using W-CDMA, running across radio spectrum, as a more viable option to its existing CDMA network.

US-based Kirusa reports that it has been granted a patent on its voice SMS technology by the US Patent and Trademark Office. The granted patent, filed in 2003, covers several aspects of the voice SMS technology invented by Kirusa that form the foundation of its voice SMS product offerings.

AOL introduces a location plug-in for its AIM instant messaging service which allows users to see where people on their buddy lists are physically located. The first phase of this push is with an unusual software plug-in developed by Skyhook Wireless, whose backers include Intel.
