FASTTAKES: IFPI, Motorola, Research and Markets

The International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) reports that worldwide revenues from music downloaded onto computers and mobile phones doubled to about $2 billion in 2006. The surge in demand for downloaded tunes had not offset a decline in sales of compact discs, the IFPI also said.

Motorola unveils a new music-enabled mobile phone that syncs its Linux OS with Microsoft's Windows Media Player on Windows XP, as well as PCs running Vista. Motorola and Microsoft have been working together on new music mobile devices, Motorola said in a statement.

Research and Markets says Asia continues to have a high growth potential for mobile communications and mobile data. The region, however, continues to share the concerns of the rest of the world about rising oil prices and the likely impact on the global economy, the research firm said.
