Google launches a free news archive service enabling Internet users to search for printed articles back to the 1700s. The 'news archive search' feature, which debuts on the Google News virtual front page, generates links to articles on publishers' Web sites.

Samsung Electronics develops an 'intelligent' light-sensitive microchip, allowing displays on devices such as mobile phones to be clearly seen even in bright sunlight. The new display chips maintain image quality on LCD screens by automatically measuring sunlight and adjusting the backlight.

Nokia and Hong Kong's CSL complete the first 16-QAM call supporting 3.6Mbps HSDPA in the CSL network. The Nokia HSDPA solution allows CSL to offer its customers high-quality broadband mobile data services and gradually enhance the data rate to 3.6Mbps when supporting devices are available.
