FASTTAKES: China Mobile, NDRC, Qualcomm

China Mobile upgrades its GSM network to EDGE in major regions of the country, in preparation for market competition before it puts a TD-SCDMA network into commercial use. China Mobile has started to offer EDGE commercial service in Beijing, Shanghai and Guangdong Province.

China's National Development and Reform Commission(NDRC) plans to issue another four mobile phone manufacturing licenses. Three Guangdong-based companies, Shenzhen Boway, Elitek Communication Devices, and Gaoke Group, are set to receive the licenses.

Qualcomm increases its financing commitment to Asia-based Advanced Micro-Fabrication Equipment (AMEC). With the new funding, AMEC was able to raise some $8 million from in its latest round of financing, the company said.
