(Bangkok Post via NewsEdge) Thai mobile carrier DTAC has reported second-quarter net profit of 1.2 billion baht ($31.6 million), or an increase of 11.3% from the previous year.

Service revenue in the second quarter rose 8.2% year-on-year to 11.3 billion baht ($300 million), while earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization rose 6.1% from last year to 4.4 billion baht ($60 million).

DTAC's subscription base rose 29% or 799,162 in the second quarter to 10.6 million. The company reported 621,128 prepaid additions and 178,034 postpaid additions in the quarter. Postpaid subscribers have shown net growth for 38 consecutive months.

But the firm reported a 14% drop in average revenue per user in the second quarter from last year due to price competition and the weaker economy, although value-added service revenue rose 42% from the year before.

DTAC CEO Sigve Brekke said the mobile market was likely to rise by 5 million to 6 million customers this year, with DTAC capturing at least 30% of new growth.

He added DTAC, a unit of Norway's Telenor, had added 1.9 million new subscribers in the first half.
