LTE Diameter signaling traffic is forecast to expand annually by 140% to 99 million messages per second by 2017 – that’s more than twice the growth rate of mobile data traffic, according to Oracle’s latest Signaling Index.
The Diameter Signaling Index (DSI) looks at how new digital services and personalized mobile data plans can fuel increases in LTE Diameter signaling messages.
Telecom Asia spoke with Jason Emery, senior director of product management at Oracle Communication, about the index and the drivers of signaling traffic and regional differences.
TA: Who should care about the rapid growth of Diameter sSignaling?
Jason Emery: Communications service provider executives, network architects and engineers all care about Diameter signaling. It’s the central nervous system of LTE mobile data services, so it’s essential not only for reliable connections, but also for new monetization opportunities from new digital lifestyle services.
In this forecast, we show how activity like data sessions, video downloads and the invocation of policy and charging rules affect signaling volumes – critical information for technology executives planning network architecture and for marketing and business executives managing and monetizing mobile data.
