A survey said 77% of global operators and pure-play cloud service providers plan to have orchestration software which brings automation to data center networks by 2017.

The IHS survey also said “OpenStack” is the top choice for operators.

Cliff Grossner, research director for data center, cloud and SDN at IHS said “OpenStack is a top choice for service providers that are deploying orchestration software in their data center networks, nabbing a first-place finish in evaluations with 18 percent of service providers participating in our latest data center study.”

He added that “though the market for data center orchestration software is still in an early stage, OpenStack vendors, VMware and Microsoft are leading in installations among the service providers we surveyed.”

The IHS survey said respondents plan to increase usage of third-party SDN and open source vSwitches nearly twofold by 2017, signaling opportunity for non-traditional network vendors

Decreasing operating costs is the number one driver for investing in the data center among respondents, followed by improved scalability and enabling new services

Data centers continue to go virtual, the survey added, with 73% of those surveyed intend to increase spending on virtual switches and routers, application delivery controllers and security appliances.
