(Associated Press via NewsEdge) China Mobile, the listed unit of the country's largest mobile operator by subscribers, said its 2006 net profit rose 23% on strong subscriber growth.

The company reported a net profit of 66.03 billion yuan ($8.54 billion) last year, up from 53.55 billion yuan ($6.9 billion) in 2005.

Revenue rose to 295.36 billion yuan ($38.2 billion) from 243.04 billion yuan ($31.4 billion) in 2005.

China Mobile said it added a monthly record of 4.91 million customers in February, up from 4.86 million new subscribers in January, as mobile networks continued to take market share from fixed-line operators in the country.
