China Mobile yesterday reduced its 4G data charges by up to 50% in response to pressure from customers.

The company's 70 yuan ($11.20) 4G plan now includes 2GB of data, up from 1GB previously, state-run news agency Xinhuareported. Its entry level 4G data package is now 30 yuan for 500MB.

China Mobile's 4G data plans have been criticized online since they were announced in January. The company has also taken heat for the network's weak signals and limited coverage at launch.

The report cites China Mobile chairman Xi Guohua as stating that the company will ramp up its 4G promotion efforts and seek to strengthen the network.

The operator added around 2 million LTE customers in April to take its total to around 5 million, but this is a drop in the bucket compared to its total mobile customer base of 785 million.

In other Chinese mobile market news, China Telecom CEO Wang Xiaochu has revealed he expects his company to be the biggest beneficiary of the proposal for the nation's three state-owned operators to establish a tower joint venture.

Because China Telecom owns fewer towers than its rivals, it would benefit the most from the sharing of resources, Wang told the South China Morning Post.

Wang would not specify how much the proposed joint venture would impact China Telecom's planned 80.3 billion yuan capex budget for 2014.
