Hoping to advance their combined mobile content capabilities, CDNetworks and Nokia Siemens Networks are teaming up. They have signed a memorandum of understanding aimed at coordinating their respective technologies.
The idea seems to be to find ways to leverage the Radio Applications Cloud Server of NSN’s Liquid portfolio as a new element of the content delivery world. Content would be served directly from the base station, reducing backhaul requirements and helping ease network congestion in the middle mile.
A few years back I looked with skepticism on the idea of a mobile CDN with the thought “You can optimize a CDN for different traffic, but it’s still the same basic infrastructure. After all, what are they going to do, put servers on towers?” Great, some more words I’m probably going to have to eat…
Nokia Siemens Networks is evolving at the moment, as Nokia is in the process of buying out Siemens and their former optical group is now Coriant. Just where that will all shake out remains to be seen.
The Korean-based CDNetworks is majority-owned by Japan’s KDDI these days, and has been focusing on extending its international reach and depth.
Working with NSN on such gear certainly won’t hurt their efforts to grow relationships with the global carrier community as the LTE wave continues.
