UK-based BT has announced it has become the first overseas telecoms operator to secure nationwide telecommunications licenses in China.
The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology has awarded a nationwide domestic IP-VPN license and a nationwide domestic ISP license to the operator's subsidiary BT China Communications Limited.
BT CEO of Global Services Bas Burger said the award of the two value added licenses represents a significant milestone for the operator, and will allow the company to meet its multinational customers' demands for secure and reliable connectivity to China.
“We are delighted with this major benefit for our customers. Thanks to cooperation between the governments of the PRC and the UK, we are now able to offer a nationwide service in China that can be scaled up to match the ambitions and needs of our customers,” Burger said.
“Being able to service and bill locally significantly simplifies the process of delivering connectivity and other communication services. It is what our customers expect from us and we are very grateful for the opportunity to do this as of today.”
