At an event in San Francisco yesterday, Apple took the wraps off two new iPad models, the thinner iPad Air and a refresh to the iPad mini.

Apple said the iPad Air is 20% thinner and 28% lighter than the fourth-generation iPad, and weighs just one pound (453.6 grams).

The 9.7-inch tablet uses a Retina display and the new 64-bit A7 chip used in the iPhone 5S. It will be priced in the US starting at $499 for a 16GB model, with an LTE version selling for $629.

The new 7.9-inch iPad mini uses a 2048x1536 Retina display, for a pixel density of 323 per square inch. It also uses the A7 chip. The starting price will be $399 for a 16GB Wi-Fi only version.

Apple will launch the iPad Air in the US from November 1, while the new iPad mini will debut later in November.
