Aliyun, Alibaba Group’s cloud computing arm, announced Wednesday that it plans to build a new cloud data center in Singapore scheduled for launch in early September.
As part of its overseas expansion plan, Aliyun has also named Singapore as its overseas headquarters.
“Singapore is a natural destination to be our headquarters for overseas expansion. The city state is a natural springboard into the Asia Pacific region, not only for us, but for our target audience,” Aliyun vice president Sicheng (Ethan) Yu said.
“We are seeing healthy demand for cloud-related data management services in Singapore because of the ease of doing business, comprehensive transport and telecommunications connections and robust intellectual property regime. The stable geo-political climate and abundance of highly skilled talent are advantages too.”
Aliyun said the Singapore facility, its seventh globally, is designed to cater the cloud computing needs of businesses investing in Southeast Asia with Chinese businesses being a key focus.
“The cloud data center in Singapore is a key milestone in our strategy to help businesses of all sizes innovate and scale, wherever they are based, and however they choose to grow,” Yu said.
Leading up to the official launch, the company is now accepting pre-orders for its core Elastic Computing Service for the Singapore data center at www.aliyun.com
Other services such as relational database service, server load balance, open cache service, open storage, open storage service and Yundun will be available to customers after the September launch, the company added.
Aliyun, established in September 2009, is a market leader in cloud computing services in China.
In the June quarter this year, Aliyun saw its revenue growth from cloud computing and internet infrastructure increase 106% year-on-year, driven by the accelerated growth of its cloud computing business.
