European cellcos plan to cash in on the popularity of notebook PCs by aiming to provide connectivity to 50 million of these devices via high-speed 3G this year. According to Berg Insight, by the end of the year, 3G networks upgraded with HSDPA technology will be able to offer data speeds of as fast as 3.6 Mbps for the same price as a DSL service but with the convenience of mobility. By 2009, the number of notebook PCs in Europe is expected to soar to 120 million. Berg Insight says that as early as the first quarter of 2006, cellcos such as 3, O2, Orange, T-Mobile and Vodafone were expected to launch HSDPA on several European markets to cash in on the mobile computing trend.
