3 HK, the mobile arm of Hutchison Telecommunications Hong Kong Holdings Limited (HTHKH), announced it completed a successful bilateral international voice-over-LTE roaming trial with Japan’s NTT DoCoMo.
The trial used S8 Home Routed (S8HR) architecture, an LTE data roaming-based technology that can be deployed without IMS interaction between parties.
“This arrangement enables VoLTE roaming service to be made available in fast-track fashion to deliver superior end-to-end world-class quality HD voice and video roaming," 3 HK said in a statement.
“When up and running commercially, this advanced network design will enable 3 Hong Kong and DoCoMo customers to enjoy top-quality VoLTE roaming in Hong Kong and Japan.”
3 HK will continue working closely with DoCoMo and other partners to take the VoLTE roaming experience to other geographies, the firm added.
The company, which plans to roll out FDD/TDD LTE-Advanced network in early 2016, also launched VoWiFi service in June.
