Despite the availability of 10G EPON components and equipment, market demand outside of China will remain low until 2013, according to Ovum.
Ovum said in a new report demand for 10G EPON and XG-PON has slackened partly because China’s operators are favoring the deployment of fiber-to-the-homeover fiber-to-the building, due to the operational costs of FTTB and competition around bandwidth.
Meanwhile, although the use of 10G PON for wireless backhaul traffic remains a strong market driver, commercial deployments are still few and far between.
In addition, the costs of PON OLT and ONU/ONT equipment for both GPON and EPON have dropped significantly, widening the cost gap between 10G PON and 1G EPON, and 2.5G GPON.
