Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has clarified the reasons for dropping Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho from his squad for the derby match against Manchester City. The Portuguese manager stated that his decision was influenced by the need to maintain high standards at Old Trafford.
Bet Premier League on Bet365Rashford and Garnacho were both made to train at Carrington on Sunday morning while Amorim took United to the Etihad, where they secured a dramatic late win inspired by Amad Diallo.
Amorim clarified that the decision to omit Rashford and Garnacho was not a disciplinary action, as he highlighted that he considers various factors when selecting his team.
Speaking to Sky Sports about the decision to omit Rashford and Garnacho, United boss Amorim said
"We try to evaluate everything - training, performance, game performance, engagement with the teammates, push the teammates up. "Everything is on the line when we analyse and try to choose the players, so it was my selection. Simple. The players are really, really smart and so everybody understands my decision and I have to choose. It's just a simple selection. "Of course the context is difficult - we have to win games and we have a difficult situation now. "But, like I said, I pay attention to everything - the way you eat, the way you put on your clothes to go to the game. Everything. "I make my evaluation and then I have to decide. I have a lot of players to choose (from) and today I did my choice."
Amorim's decision to drop Marcus Rashford and Garnacho was heavily praised by former Manchester United defender Gary Neville while challenging Rashford and Garnacho to use their exclusion to turn their season around.
"I want Marcus Rashford and Garnacho to come back stronger, take the message that they’ve been given this morning by going training at the training ground on a Sunday when no one else is there, I want them to take this in the right spirit and become the very best players for Manchester United
Amorim further claims that both players will have the chance to fight for their place ahead of Thursday’s Carabao Cup quarter-final against Tottenham. Rashford has enjoyed a great start to life under the Portuguese coach, opening the scoring within two minutes of Amorim's first match in charge against Ipswich Town in November. He also netted a brace in United's 4-0 thrashing of Everton at Old Trafford.
