Wayne Rooney has been sacked as Plymouth Argyle manager, having gone nine games without a win in the Championship, and they are rock bottom of the Championship.

The former Manchester United striker was appointed as the head coach of the Championship side in May 2024, taking over from interim head coach Neil Dewsnip. Since his appointment, he has led the club to only four wins in the Championship out of a total of 25 matches played across all competitions this season.

Rooney's final straw at Plymouth came after a 2-0 defeat to fellow relegation strugglers Oxford United on Sunday, leaving the Pilgrims four points from safety. The club released a statement about the decision on Monday, confirming that Rooney’s departure was a mutual agreement with the club’s board.

Rooney said:
"I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Board of Plymouth Argyle Football Club, in particular Simon Hallett and Neil Dewsnip who I shared great relationships with. Thanks also to all the staff who made me feel welcome and who make the club such a special place, the players and fans for their efforts and support during my time as Head Coach and I wish them all the best for the future. "To the Green Army thanks for making the games at Home Park so special, they are memories that we will share forever. I would also like to give a special mention to my coaching staff Kevin Nancekivell, Simon Ireland, Darryl Flahavan and Mike Phelan for their knowledge, dedication, help and support. Plymouth Argyle will always hold a special place in my heart, and I will continue to look out for and take interest in their results."

The club has now confirmed that first-team coach Kevin Nancekivell and club captain Joe Edwards will lead the team ahead of the Pilgrims' clash with Bristol City on New Year's Day.

Wayne Rooney's departure from Home Park raises serious questions about his long-term career as a manager. This marks the second time he has been dismissed from a managerial position; he was also let go by Birmingham last season following their relegation to League One. Additionally, Rooney resigned from his role at Derby County for not meeting the performance standards in the Championship, and he left DC United after failing to secure a place in the MLS postseason playoffs.
