The 33-year-old marathon runner participated in the Paris Olympics, where she represented Uganda in the marathon and finished 44th in the race. After the end of the Paris Olympics, she was reportedly attacked at her home in western Kenya, where she had been training, by her boyfriend, Dickson Ndiema, who bought a jerrican of petrol, poured it on her, and set her ablaze during a heated argument Sunday.

The Uganda Athletics Federation (UAF) confirmed the report in a post posted on their official X page.

The UAF tweeted
"We regret to announce that our athlete Rebecca Cheptegei, who competed at the Olympics has suffered severe injuries and is hospitalized at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret. This follows an incident involving her Kenyan boyfriend pouring petrol and setting fire on her."

Some reports have claimed that the cause of the unfortunate incident happened because of the land where the house was built. Both her boyfriend Ndiema and Cheptegei suffered injuries and are recovering at the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital. However, Cheptegei got the worst of it, as she received burns to 75 percent of her body.

Cheptegei was born in Uganda on 22 February 1991, and she has been racing since 2010.
