According to a report by the Telegraph, Kim Kum-yong and Ri Jing-sik are both under intense scrutiny for smiling during the victory photo with South Korean athletes, whom North Korea considers their fierce rivals.
The North Korean athletes were captured in a selfie smiling with the gold medal winners from China and bronze medal winners from South Korea after stepping off the podium. The picture went viral, with fans worldwide calling it a ‘beautiful moment in Olympic history. However, since the Olympic athletes arrived back home on Aug. 15, they are reportedly under scrutiny for smiling alongside South Korea's Shin Yu-bin and Lim Jong-hoon, and they could face punishment.
Some reports claim that before taking part in the Olympics, North Korean athletes were reportedly given specific instructions not to engage with foreign athletes, including South Koreans. If any violation of this directive is confirmed, those involved could face penalties.
