Tottenham Hotspur scored back-to-back league wins for just the second time this season after seeing off Manchester United in 1-0 win in North London. Ange Postecoglou’s side moved up to 12 th as James Maddison scored the all-important strike that gave Spurs maximum points at home. Ruben Amorim’s charges dropped down to 15 th on the Premier League log as his team slumped to a second successive league defeat – their third loss against Spurs this season.

Maddison nets on return to sink United
Both sides came into the clash in a precarious position in the bottom half of the table. James Maddison marked his return from injury with a first half goal that earned Spurs a much-needed Premier League win on their own patch. The Lily Whites needed to endure an early onslaught from the visitors as Guglielmo Vicario denied both Rasmus Hojlund and Alejandro Garnacho on his return to the team. Maddison tapped in from close range on 13 minutes after pouncing on a rebound from Lucas Bergvall’s shot. Garnacho had the chance to draw level moments later but the Argentinian fluffed his lines. The Red Devils pressed on in the second half with the hope of landing the equalizer while Spurs looked to catch them on the break but 1-0 is how it remained.
Postecoglou’s Spurs return to winning ways in North London
Sunday’s 1-0 win over Ruben Amorim’s side was the first time Ange Postecoglou’s men have won at home in 2025 – their last Premier League win coming back in November. Postecoglou’s injury crisis at Spurs saw them plummet down the league table before getting back on the winning horse against Brentford in Matchweek 24. Sunday’s win over United meant Spurs recorded back-to-back league wins for the first time since September which was a welcome boost after a week where they crashed out of both the FA Cup and League Cup semi-finals.

Show more newsMore Amorim agony as United languish in bottom half
Ruben Amorim’s turbulent start to life in Manchester took another twist in the build-up to Sunday’s meeting. The Portuguese coach was dealt a double blow after his squad was hit with illness and injuries that saw Amad Diallo’s season come to a premature end due to an ankle injury. The Ivorian forward has been a shining light in United’s dreadful campaign with his six goals and six assists baling the Red Devils out on a few occasions this season. Amorim acknowledged his side are in a rough patch after admitting, “my job is so, so hard here” following defeat to Tottenham. His Man United record paints a worrying picture with just four wins from 14 Premier League games in the Old Trafford hotseat.
What’s next for struggling Premier League giants?
Tottenham will be hoping to kick on after successive Premier League wins but their hopes of landing silverware this season lies in the UEFA Europa League. The North Londoners are now up to 12 th in the league on 30 points and a strong run of results in the backend of the campaign could see them land a European place. Spurs sit 13 points off the European places and have the Last 16 of the Europa League to look forward to. Man United are also in the knockout stage of the Europa League while they’ll host Fulham in a tricky 5 th round FA Cup tie next month. They’ll be hoping they can turn their league form around in the meantime. The Red Devils travel to Goodison Park to face Everton while Spurs will be away to Ipswich Town in Matchweek 26.
