The 2025 Australian Federal Election Prediction: Can the Oppositions Snatch the Albanese Government?

Australian federal elections have been held since 1901, with the Commonwealth Electoral Act of 1902 holding the first election, establishing the Australian elections process. A compulsory voting policy in 1924 and preferential voting in 1918 were in place for the House of Representatives and the Senate.

Australia's two major political parties are the Australian Labor Party and the Liberal-National Coalition. The Australian Labor Party was founded in the 1890s and is the oldest political party in Australia. It has always been linked with trade unions and traditionally represented the working class. The other opposition party, the Liberal National Coalition Party of Australia, was founded in 1944 by Robert Menzies. The party represents those with business interests and the middle class. With the next Australian federal elections set for September 2025, it is now left for the opposition parties to start the fight for seats in the House. Can they snatch the Albanese government?

Electoral System

Australia's voting system uses preferential voting for House of Representatives elections and the single transferable vote in a multi-member constituency for all Senate elections. Preferential voting allows voters to vote for candidates in order of preference, and single transferable voting allows them also to rank political parties. In the House of Representatives, a voter votes for the candidates from first to last choice on the ballot. Suppose no candidate receives an absolute majority of first-preference votes. In that case, the candidate with the fewest first-preference votes is eliminated, and their votes are redistributed according to their second preference. This process is repeated until a candidate has achieved an absolute majority. With this system, an elected person can be expected to have broad support as many voters’ backup choices.

In Senate elections, each state elects 12 senators, with two senators from each territory. A voter may either vote for individual candidates “below the line,” numbering at least as many squares as there are vacancies, or choose to vote “above the line,” identifying just one party or group order down which that voter’s preferences will flow.

Past Election Results

During the 2022 House of Representatives election, the Australian Labor Party, led by Anthony Albanese, which took the most seats, defeated the Coalition. The nine-year competition ended with the Labor Party back to government after the 2022 House of Representatives election. The Australian Labor Party won the majority of 77 seats, which is enough for the authority, and the Liberal-National Coalition got 58 seats, which was a drop from what they had. The Greens won 4 seats compared to their previous polling. The Australian Labor Party majority Senate seat has given them legislative control.

The Albanese government’s election marked the birth of a new age in Australian political life in several areas, such as the climate, social welfare, and government integrity. Seen against this background, the Australian Labor Party’s victory in 2022 was, beyond a reasonable doubt, a call for a change that could not be less. Notably, the overwhelming fears of climate change and the ever-growing levels of economic marginalization gave the 2022 federal election in Australia its eternal status as the most critical turning point in the country's history.

Liberal-National Coalition

The Liberal-National Coalition is a team-up between the Liberal Party of Australia and the National Party. This partnership began in 1923 to fight the growing appeal of communism and socialism in Australia. The Country Party, now called the National Party, started it. Robert Menzies set up the Liberals in 1944. They represented ideas like feminism, trade unions, classic freedom, and free markets. Once the Country Party, the smaller Nationals spoke up for country folks. Since then, they've run the show.

They've been in charge for over half the time since World War II. This includes from 1949 to 1972, with Menzies Holt, Gorton, and McMahon at the helm, then from 1975 to 1983 under Fraser, from 1996 to 2007 with Howard, and from 2013 to 2022. Under Prime Minister Scott Morrison, the previous government called on voters to re-elect them for their decisive economic leadership through the pandemic. The Coalition declared that due to its job creation, achievement in protecting the nation, and steering of the economy, it was best placed to lead the country out of the COVID-19 crisis. However, as people united, the coalition saw disunity, reducing the party's strength and affecting the team members’ motivation.

The party is expected to be further weakened in the next election by the current government, preventing them from securing a substantial position in the House. Since the current government has more power and the backing of the people, the coalition will not succeed in winning the federal election next time.

Other Parties

The Greens and other parties put climate change, social justice, and cutting economic inequality at the center of their agenda. They wanted to boost their seat in the Senate but couldn't go after the federal seat because they needed more history and backing, which held them back from a federal election win.

Australian Labor Party (ALP)

Led by Anthony Albanese, it was founded in 1891, which makes it the oldest party in Australia. The party advocated and began with the labor movement, fighting for workers' rights and justice. With its value now placed on citizens' well-being, focusing more on education, wages, healthcare, and economic inequality, the party was voted into power in the 2022 federal election against the incumbent party. The laborers are a party that can influence and sway citizens by using their votes. After becoming the prime minister in 2022, following the majority of seat owners in the house, the party leader champions citizens' well-being and further policing policies to improve the well-being of the common people. With the party elections coming again in fast succession campaigns and promises going out, citizens who have experienced firsthand love from the incumbent party after a change in government will most likely vote for them again.

Factors that will Influence Voters' Decision

  • Labor policies on climate change, wages, and living costs for the citizens.
  • Effect of a strong party led by Anthony Albanese.
  • The current performance of essential well-being, including schools, education, and the state of the economy.
  • Effect of a weak opposition in Championing for the federal election.
