Manchester United have finally appointed Sporting Lisbon coach Ruben Amorim to become the sixth permanent manager to step into the dugout since Sir Alex Ferguson’s iconic 26-year tenure.
Bet Premier League on Bet365The 39-year-old Portuguese manager will join Sporting Lisbon on November 11 but has already signed a two-year contract that keeps him at Old Trafford until June 2027. The manager will replace Erik ten Hag in the dugout following the Dutch manager's termination of contract on Monday after two and a half years in charge.
Sporting confirmed in a statement that United have agreed to pay 11 million euros (£9.25 million) to trigger a release clause in Amorim's contract.
Former Manchester United manager Ruud van Nistelrooy, who took over as interim coach following Erik ten Hag's dismissal on Monday, will continue in his role for United's next three matches.
Amorim has been a good coach with a great record, having guided Sporting to two Portuguese league titles after arriving from Braga in 2020. Prior to his appointment, the Lisbon giants had waited 19 years to end their title drought.
Amorim was considered by Liverpool, Barcelona, Bayern Munich, and West Ham for their vacant managerial roles last season before he opted to test himself in the Premier League.
Amorim's first fixture in charge of his new home will be on 24 November, after the international break, in the Premier League against newly promoted Ipswich.
Manchester United currently sit in 14th place in the Premier League, seven points off the fourth spot and only seven points above the relegation zone. Their next game will be an important clash against Chelsea on Sunday at the Old Trafford Stadium.
