Earlier this month, the Panel of Inquiry started hearing the Financial Fair Play (FFP) charges against Manchester City. The Cityzens were charged with breaking financial fair play rules over nine years from 2009 to 2018. It took the Premier League 4 years to confirm the allegations against the club when it was announced on February 6, 2023. The case doesn’t seem to be ending any time from now because if the panel finds City guilty of some or all of the charges, the club would most likely appeal that decision (although it cannot be taken to the CAS), which would delay the imposition of any sanctions or points deductions. However, if City are eventually found guilty, they will face a series of punishments, including expulsion from England.

As such, we look forward to this matter being put to rest once and for all.

While it doesn’t look like Manchester City will escape punishment, they will find a way through their defence to beat down the charges, which will tell on their punishment. According to Premier League rules, any punishment could be a fine, points deduction, suspension or even permanent expulsion from the Premier League. However, their permanent expulsion looks harsh, and they would only suffer a fine and, at worst, a points deduction. Everton and Nottingham Forrest were recent clubs that suffered points reduction in a case like this.
