HENDRA Setiawan, born in Pemalang, Central Java, on August 25, 1984, is one of Indonesia’s badminton legends, having carved out a remarkable career on the international stage.

Hendra Setiawan

His journey into badminton began at an early age, often following his father, a badminton coach in Pemalang. His talent and dedication led him to turn professional, launching his career in 1992.

As a child, Hendra was just another boy who loved watching badminton matches on TV. He never imagined he could one day become a world champion.

Back then, I only wanted to make it to the national training camp.

But over time, that small dream grew into a bigger ambition. Meeting hardworking senior players at the national camp fueled his motivation. What started as a desire to join, became a goal to become the world champion.

Hendra’s journey to the pinnacle of success was no easy feat. He started playing at the age of six, following in the footsteps of his father, who was a badminton coach in his hometown of Pemalang. His talent and perseverance helped him break into the professional circuit. Alongside Markis Kido, Hendra won numerous prestigious titles, including the gold medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

After his successful partnership with Kido, Hendra formed a new pair with Mohammad Ahsan. Together, they secured three World Championship titles in 2013, 2015, and 2019, as well as two All England titles.

The most memorable moment was when I first won All England in 2013, beating Denmark in the final.

For Hendra, badminton is no longer just a sport, but also a promising profession

The prize money wasn’t as big back then. But now, for players, everything has a prize.

He encourages young athletes to pursue their ambitions and dreams because, as he points out, being an athlete can also be financially rewarding.

He also appreciates the role of the federation and private sector in nurturing young athletes.

I realize that if Indonesia wants to continue to succeed, regeneration must proceed without obstacles. The younger generation must be properly prepared. The regeneration can’t be delayed.

This sentiment is not without reason. According to Hendra, the competition in the world of badminton has become increasingly fierce. In the past, only certain countries dominated badminton, and Indonesia was one of them. But now, things have changed.

Countries that were once underestimated are now dominating championships. For example, Taipei, which was once easily beaten, now has an Olympic champion. Now, no one is guaranteed to win, everyone has a chance.

Hendra’s journey has now reached its final chapter. After 35 years in the badminton world, Hendra Setiawan has decided to retire. He announced that the 2025 Indonesia Masters, which just concluded, would be his last tournament as a professional athlete.

This decision marks the end of a long and illustrious career from an athlete who has made significant contributions to Indonesian badminton. With a wealth of achievements and dedication, Hendra Setiawan will always be remembered as one of Indonesia’s badminton icons, inspiring future generations.

His legacy of determination will continue to inspire the next generation of Indonesian badminton players. Because, more than just a world champion, Hendra Setiawan symbolizes hard work, perseverance, and an unwavering spirit.
