Asnawi Mangkualam, captain of Indonesia’s national team, who is currently representing Port FC in Thai League 1, has shared insights about his journey toward pursuing an international career. Despite having a substantial salary in Indonesia, Asnawi chose to play abroad, motivated by the invaluable experience and growth opportunities that he believed awaited him.

In a Telecom Asia Sport exclusive, Asnawi, a trusted defender under Coach Shin Tae Yong, opened up about his initial overseas offer. "It was in January 2021 when I first got the chance to play abroad, with an offer from K League 2's Ansan Greeners to join as a right-back," he recalls.

Long determined to challenge himself outside Indonesia, he eagerly accepted the offer. "After discussing with my agent, I approached PSM Makassar, my club at that time, to sort out contract details. Thankfully, they were supportive and swiftly handled the release," Asnani explained.

Aside from club discussions, Asnawi sought advice from Coach Shin Tae Yong. "Coach Shin asked if I was certain, knowing that the salary in Korea would likely be much lower than in Indonesia. But I was committed. He supported my decision fully, so I went ahead, even if it meant a pay cut," Asnawi shared.

Asnawi's choice to play abroad stemmed from a childhood dream. "I've always wanted to play internationally. When the opportunity came, I didn't hesitate," he said. Even though financial concerns initially caused hesitation among his family, Asnawi received their blessing after thoughtful discussions. "Besides Coach Shin, my family’s support was crucial. At first, there was concern about the lower salary, but they eventually understood and gave their blessing," he recounted.

To young Indonesian players, Asnawi advises taking international chances if possible. "For young players in Indonesia, I say go for it if you have the chance to play abroad. It’s a different level of discipline and experience," he encouraged.

Asnawi's career began in 2014 with PSM Makassar's junior team, and he also played with Persiba Balikpapan before returning to PSM’s senior squad. At Ansan Greeners, he scored five goals over 45 appearances and then moved to Korea’s Jeonnam Dragons, netting twice in 26 matches. Now with Port FC in Thailand, Asnawi has scored once in his 22 matches so far.
