Amid the upcoming Western Province Rugby Football Union (WPRFU) elections scheduled for April 30, former union president Zelt Marais has been nominated for every available leadership position—including President, Deputy President, Vice-President, and a seat on the executive committee—despite confirmation that his appeal against a 10-year suspension has been dismissed.

The South African Rugby Union (SARU) announced that an independent Appeal Panel has upheld a misconduct finding against Marais, originally imposed in 2022. The disciplinary action, which bars him from participating in any rugby-related activities or holding office in SARU or any other rugby body until October 2034, stemmed from statements made by Marais in communications to SARU members and in public forums.

In a 61-page judgment, the panel found the original sanction by the Judicial Officer to be justified, citing the seriousness of the charges, the seniority of Marais’ former role, and what it described as a continued lack of remorse.

There had been no apology for his conduct... and every possibility that he would continue along this path unless sanctioned.

Marais has been a polarizing figure in South African rugby. Supporters argue he acted in defense of WPRFU’s independence and financial autonomy during SARU’s 2021 intervention, which placed the union under administration following what SARU described as a financial crisis. Critics, including SARU and several affiliated stakeholders, have accused him of misconduct, poor governance, and divisive public commentary.

Marais has consistently maintained that his actions were always in the best interests of the union and consistent with exposing issues that required transparency. He would most probably call into question the timing of the ruling—just before elections— and it's highly likely he will be consulting legal advisors on possible further steps.

This year’s WPRFU elections are expected to be closely watched. Other presidential nominees include Kevin Kiewits, Ronald Bantom, and Reuben Machelm, each with significant experience in regional and club rugby structures.

The WPRFU has been under SARU administration since October 2021, following concerns over its financial sustainability. Peter Jooste, the current and third administrator since SARU’s takeover, officially released the nominations list earlier this month. The outcome of the elections may shape the direction of the union as it seeks to rebuild after years of governance dispute

The upcoming WPRFU elections have attracted a diverse slate of candidates, each bringing unique backgrounds and perspectives to the table.

Zelt Marais

A former president of the WPRFU, Zelt Marais has been nominated for multiple positions, including President, Deputy President, Vice-President, and a seat on the executive committee. His tenure was marked by significant events, including the union's administration by the South African Rugby Union (SARU) starting in October 2021 due to financial challenges. Marais has contested a 10-year suspension imposed by SARU for misconduct, with his appeal recently dismissed. He maintains that his actions were in the union's best interests.

Kevin Kiewits

Kevin Kiewits has a history with the WPRFU, having previously served on its executive committee. He resigned from his position in 2020, reportedly due to disagreements over the Investec deal. Kiewits has been active in rugby administration and is known for his commitment to the development of the sport at the grassroots level. His return to the electoral race indicates a continued interest in contributing to the union's governance.

Ronald Banton

Ronald Banton is a seasoned rugby administrator with an Honours degree from the University of the Western Cape. He has served in leadership roles as a school principal and in various community sports organizations. Banton was elected Vice President of the WPRFU in March 2021 and has been involved in rugby at the club and schools levels. His experience and dedication to the sport position him as a strong candidate for leadership within the union.

Reuben Machelm

Reuben Machelm has held various roles in rugby administration, including serving as the interim CEO of Western Province Professional Rugby. His tenure was marked by efforts to stabilize the organization during challenging times. Machelm's background in sports management and his experience in steering organizations through periods of transition are assets he brings to the electoral race.

The upcoming elections present an opportunity for WPRFU members to choose leadership that aligns with their vision for the future of rugby in the region. Each candidate offers a distinct perspective, and the outcome will shape the direction of the union in the coming years.
