Gqeberha – Adriaan Wildschutt sent shockwaves through the South African road running scene on Sunday morning when he obliterated the national 10km record at the opening race of the Absa Run Your City Series in Gqeberha.

Competing in ideal cool overcast conditions, the 26-year-old from Ceres stormed across the finish line at Kings Beach in a sensational time of 27 minutes and 28 seconds. He beat the previous record of 27:35, set by Precious Mashele at the same event in 2023.
The race featured a competitive field, with Wildschutt holding off a strong challenge to claim first place, while the battle for the remaining podium positions saw fierce competition.
Vincent Kipkorir (27:49) was second with South Africa’s Kabelo Maluadzi (27:59) in third position.

His performance on Sunday now cements his position as the fastest South African ever over 10km on the road—a goal he has long set his sights on.
Legendary South African distance runner Zola Budd-Pieterse played a pivotal role in Adriaan’s journey. Along with his brother Nadeel Wildschutt (27), Adriaan was introduced to the US collegiate running and academic system by Budd-Pieterse, who helped facilitate their move in 2017 and 2018 respectively.
Budd-Pieterse praised Adriaan’s dedication and perseverance, attributing his historic performance to relentless hard work and focus.
Adriaan is an example of courage, hard work and determination. He took advantage of the opportunities presented to him, and with the right support, he has become a role model—not just in running, but in academics and life. Running is a stepping stone for him, not the end goal.
Wildschutt's extraordinary achievement not only rewrites the national record books but also serves as an inspiring testament to what can be accomplished with talent, discipline, and vision.
