Viktorija Golubic
Golubic made a valiant effort to make it through the US Open qualifying in order to join the main event.
With the exception of Kimberly Birrell, who was forced into a third set in the second round of these qualifiers, Golubic won in straights to advance to the first round. Sadly for the 29-year-old, she has never advanced past this level of the US Open.
Worse, despite being ranked 35th once in her career, Golubic has struggled at Grand Slams, particularly on hard courts, and has never won a match at the Australian Open.
And now that he's up against a player who thrives on this surface, it's little wonder that the Swiss player is a stunning 5/1 to win this.
Jessica Pegula
She competed in three tournaments in the US Open Series this season, leading up to the year's fourth Grand Slam, and Pegula would have been pleased with her performance.
Sure, she would have like to compete in at least one of them, in Washington, Toronto, or Cincinnati, but as far as warm-up activities go, Pegula delivered.
Caroline Garcia's three results this year were a second-round loss to Daria Saville in Washington, a semifinal loss to Simona Halep in Toronto, and a straight-set hammering in the quarterfinals of the Cincinnati Open.
Looking back on the first quarter, Pegula appeared to have done well in Miami, where she was a semifinalist, and in Australia, where she finished in the top eight.
What she now wants is to get off to a good start in a competition where she has never made it past the fourth round.
Expert Betting Tips
Pegula should not only win today, but do it in straight sets to easily advance to the second round.
