Stan Wawrinka stunned top seed Daniil Medvedev in the second round of the Moselle Open, advancing to his first quarterfinal since reaching the last eight in Melbourne 2 in 2021.
Wawrinka had only won three matches this season before to the start of this tournament, but has already won four in a row. In the qualifications, the Swiss overcame Laslo Djere and Zsombor Piros before defeating Joao Sousa in straight sets in the first round.
On Thursday, the 37-year-old came within a point of winning his second consecutive main draw match in straight sets, but he lost a match opportunity in the second set tiebreak. Medvedev finally won the tiebreak and forced the deciding set, but he didn't get off to a good start, with Wawrinka jumping out to a 3-0 lead courtesy to an early break.
The former world number one rallied back by winning the next three games, but Wawrinka broke for the second time in the eighth game and eventually won the match 6-4, 6-7 (-79), 6-3.
This was Wawrinka's first top-10 victory since defeating Andrey Rublev in the 2020 Paris Masters. If he wins on Friday, it will be his first semifinal appearance since reaching the last four in Doha two years ago.
Mikael Ymer
World No. 100 Mikael Ymer, who thrashed France's Grégoire Barrère in straight sets in the second round on Thursday, will face Wawrinka.
The 24-year-old Swede didn't face a single break point during the match, winning 6-4, 6-3 in an hour and 21 minutes. Ymer won 77% of his points and 80% of his first serves to advance to the season's fourth round.
He had reached the final eight in Adelaide but had also reached the semifinals in Montpellier and Washington.
Ymer has yet to drop a set in the competition, having defeated fellow Frenchman, eighth seed Adrian Mannarino, 7-5, 6-0 in the first round.
He is 21-20 this season and will seek to maintain his momentum in the last eight match.
