Matteo Arnaldi has taken Holger Rune's position at the ATP NextGen Finals. Rune, who won the Paris Masters final, is currently the season's first alternate for the ATP Finals in Turin.
Arnaldi, 21, appeared as a wild card in his only tour-level match in Rome. However, he was defeated in straight sets by Marin Cilic in his first encounter.
Arnaldi, who began the season at world no. 363, has made quite an impression this season, rising 229 places to a career-high of no. 134 this week.
This year, the Italian right-hander competed in a number of Challenger events, reaching his first two finals at that level. He won his first championship in May in Francavilla al Mare, Italy, and finished second at Saint-Tropez last month.
Brandon Nakashima
Brandon Nakashima will be attempting to defend his title in 2022 after reaching the quarterfinals in his maiden ATP Next Gen Finals appearance in 2021.
Nakashima enters the competition with a 30-23 record. This year, he earned his first title by defeating Marcos Giron in the final of the San Diego Open.
This season brought him a number of firsts. The 21-year-old made his Grand Slam last 16 debut at Wimbledon and also advanced to the third rounds of the French Open and US Open for the first time.
Aside from his first championship, Nakashima has five quarterfinal appearances in 2022, the most recent being in Florence last month.
The American was eliminated in the first round of the Paris Masters by Dan Evans last week, but he will seek to rebound in Milan and get his season off to a strong start.
Last year, Nakashima overcame Juan Manuel Cerundolo and Holger Rune in the round robin round to reach the final four, but was eliminated by Sebastian Korda.
