Lorenzo Musetti has gotten off to a fast start in Florence. On Thursday, the third seed, who had a first-round bye, required just 69 minutes to destroy Bernabe Zapata Miralles in straight sets.
The Italian won 6-3, 6-0 after serving nine aces and dropping only six games on his serve. Musetti faced no break points during the match and converted 4 of 9 to defeat the Spaniard.
The World No. 28, who earned his first ATP championship earlier this year at the Hamburg Open by defeating Carlos Alcaraz in the final, will be attempting to reach his second straight hard court semifinal. In Sofia, he reached the last four before losing to Marc-Andrea Huesler.
The 20-year-old increased his tour record to 25-22 and his overall record to 35-23. He'll compete in his sixth tour-level quarterfinal of the season. He also won a Challenger championship earlier this year in Forli.
Mackenzie McDonald
Mackenzie McDonald advanced to his third quarterfinal of the season on Thursday, defeating Francesco Passaro in straight sets in the second round.
After defeating compatriot Jenson Brooksby 6-4, 4-6, 6-1, the World No. 79 required an hour and 35 minutes to defeat the Italian 6-4, 7-5. Both sets had a similar feel to them: the American broke early, Passaro reclaimed the break, but McDonald broke again late in the set to win both.
McDonald saved one of three break points and converted four of eight. He has now improved his season record on the circuit to 23-25.
The 27-year-old, who reached the quarterfinals in Dubai and Seoul, will compete in the season's third quarterfinal.
McDonald has yet to win three consecutive matches this year, but he can do so with a victory on Friday.
