Daniil Medvedev vs Nikoloz Basilashvili Prediction: the Outcome Depends on Daniil

The first opponent of the fourth racket of the world at the tournament in Austrian Vienna will be the Georgian Nikoloz Basilashvili. Despite the fact that Medvedev and Basilashvili play in the tour for quite a long time, the men have not met. Medvedev is quoted as a huge favorite. 

Medvedev missed two weeks after the tournament in Astana, where he got injured and withdrew from the match against Djokovic. Daniil has fully recovered and is now quoted as one of the favorites of the tournament in Vienna. Before meeting with Djokovic in Astana, Daniil played well against Ramos, Ruusuvuori and Bautista Agut, beating them in two sets. Medvedev is fight for a chance to make the final tournament in Turin, and to play in Italy, it is enough to win the competition in Vienna. So Medvedev is fully motivated and there are no illusions. 

The current tone of the Georgian is uncertain, so making predictions is a big risk. He did not play in major tournaments in October and played only three matches in September: two in Metz against Bergs and Rinderknech and one in Sofia - a loss to Verdasco in two games. Overall, Nikoloz, a recent top-20 player, has eight losses in his nine most recent games and a win over Bergs in Metz. So his black streak in Vienna will extend.

We doubt that the match between Medvedev and Basilashvili will be protracted. But here everything depends on Daniil. If Medvedev is as fit as he was in Astana right now, he should have no trouble getting through the first round of the tournament in Vienna. Especially since Medvedev's opponent is Basilashvili, who has won just one match in his last nine.
