Dan Evans was supposed to play Matteo Berrettini in the first round, however the Italian withdrew due to an injury. The Brit was then pitted against Oscar Otte, a fortunate loser.
Evans got off to a fast start, breaking his opponent's serve twice to take a 4-1 lead in the first set. Otte showed indications of fight by winning the following two games to tie the game at 4-3. The German then saved two set points on his serve to tie the game at 5-4.
Evans then easily served out the set in the following game to secure the set. Otte dominated the second set, jumping out to a 3-0 lead. He held on to his lead and even served for the set at 5-3, but was broken. The set quickly went into a tie-break, with the Brit eventually winning 6-4, 7-6. (3).
Karen Khachanov
In the opening round of his campaign, Khachanov faced qualifier J.J. Wolf in Vienna. Both players had break point opportunities early in the first set but let them slip away. The set finally went to a tie-break, with the Russian emerging victorious.
The pair also held their serve effectively in the second set. Until the very end, it appeared like the set would conclude in a tie-break. Khachanov makes his move with Wolf serving to remain in the match at 6-5. The Russian comfortably broke his opponent's serve and won the match 7-6 (4), 7-5.
Expert Betting Tips
Khachanov has had a stronger season than the Brit, but unless he tweaks his tactics slightly, his opponent might win again. Evans is a difficult opponent to face, and he may rise to the occasion once more to dethrone the Russian.
