Ruud has already qualified for the semifinals after beating Felix Auger-Aliassime and Taylor Fritz. In his last group encounter, he faced Rafael Nadal, who was eliminated from contention after losing his first two sets.
For the most of the first set, both players held well on serve. Ruud had a few of break points in the eighth game but failed to capitalize. The Norwegian then served to remain in the set at 6-5, but Nadal broke his serve to win it.
The second set followed a similar pattern, with the duo remaining consistent on serve until Ruud stumbled at the end. With the 23-year-old serving to stay in the match at 6-5, Nadal broke his serve yet again to win 7-5, 7-5.
Andrey Rublev
Rublev began his ATP Finals campaign with a three-set win against Daniil Medvedev before falling to Novak Djokovic in straight sets. Everything came down to his match against Stefanos Tsitsipas, with the winner advancing to the last four.
The Greek raced out to a 4-1 lead in the first set, which he held on to win the opener. Rublev increased his level at the conclusion of the second set after being evenly matched for the whole of it. He won the final three games of the set to force a tiebreaker.
Rublev took an early break in the third set to go up 3-1. He broke his opponent's serve again in the seventh game, then served out the match to win 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 and advance to the semifinals for the first time.
